California Trip 11/27/22

Day 8

Today was our last day of vacation. After waking up, we went to the hotel breakfast (same as yesterday) and started packing our stuff. Once we got it all into the car, we drove back to Palm Springs to spend the rest of our day. Upon arriving, we decided to hike along Victor Trail in Indian Canyons and ate lunch in our car immediately afterward. The weather was great while we were walking (warm with a slight breeze), and we enjoyed seeing the Fan Palms, rocky hills, and even a tarantula! After leaving Indian Canyons around 3:00, we drove to something called "Robolights" and ended up making a reservation for 4:15. In the meantime, we stopped at the Palm Springs visitor center to eat something and finish packing up our suitcases. When 4 o’clock came around, we drove back to Robolights, still having almost no clue what we were about to see. It ended up being a nearly 2-acre art & light display created by artist Kenny Irwin Jr. The artist has lived on the premises “since birth” and the entire property is a creative madhouse of sculptures. After walking around for around half an hour, we met up with Kenny near the end of the exhibit as he had told us to do. He then answered a couple questions and showed/tried to sell us some of his resin art. We politely declined and then rushed off to the airport to catch our 6:15 flight, making with a couple extra minutes to spare. On our flight home, we munched on our leftover snacks as well as some of the delicious bread our friend had made yesterday. We landed at about 11:30 and were home by 1ish. Although it went by fast, it was a great trip overall and we made lots of memories!

It's been almost 5 months since my last update, so my guilt has finally motivated me enough to get another one written. I got so used to writing about our moving and traveling adventures that it is difficult to just write about everyday stuff now that residency is keeping us in one place! Back in July, Paul was fortunate enough to only have to work one shift over 4th of July weekend. We decided to go up to my parent's place on Mille Lacs Lake (where I spent my summers growing up). It was little surreal being able to do the things with my own kids that I did as a kid on the same lake that I did them (fishing, tubing & skiing, playing on the lake shore, etc). And there is nothing that makes me still feel young more than doing active things that require some physical skill (such as water skiing). Day 5 This morning we started our day by driving to see the Painted Ladies in San Francisco. Next, we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge, stopped briefly, then went back across. After that, we stopped at the Palace of Fine Arts, and while there, we walked around the manmade pond and fascinating architecture. Following that, we went to the Wave Organ and got a nice view of the GGB and of Alcatraz Island. Then, we drove down Lombard Street again on the way to Pier 39. We parked about a block away from the pier, and the parking was free because of Thanksgiving! A couple of things we saw there were seals, musical stairs, a crepe shop, a Christmas tree, and an old railroad ramp. We walked around for a while and eventually decided to catch a streetcar (twice) before heading back to our car. As we rounded the corner to our block, we noticed our empty suitcase sitting at a bus stop. Someone (most likely a homeless person) had burned the cords that were tying it down, taking our air mattresses

Hello all. Just wanted to give you all a little update on how our first couple of weeks in VA have been. We are all moved in and unpacked in our new house in Suffolk, VA. We are about 10 miles (15 min) from the Naval Hospital where Paul will be working. I might try to find a part-time job until the baby is born (around Thanksgiving). Although we are loving our new house, we are already getting homesick for our friends and family. Hopefully we will start meeting some people around here soon! I had my first pregnancy visit just before we moved. For those of you who have been asking, I am feeling much better (no more queasy stomach), and I have not gained any weight yet so I can't send any pictures of my big fat belly since I don't have one yet! The weather here has been very inconsistent so far. It was rainy and cold, then sunny and 75, then rainy and humid, and now it's hot (close to 90) and humid.
