South-Western US Road Trip: 12/27/21

Day 11

California, Nevada

After waking up, we packed the car up to leave San Diego. Just before we left, the owner of the house where we were staying stopped by, so we talked with them for a bit before starting our drive. Our first stop was the Ring Trail, at Hole in the Wall. We hiked the whole trail, then up to a small overlook. Kade, Kye, and Jolie decided to try and cut across the edge of the “mountain”, and almost got stuck/lost in the dark and cold when they couldn’t find a way down, but got back to the car just as the light disappeared. Our drive away was snowy, even though there were cacti and Joshua trees all around. Next, we drove into Las Vegas. We planned to see the free light and water shows around town, but unfortunately, our first try (the rain show at Planet Hollywood) was a bust. While there, however, we did see a store called “Jolie”, so Jolie got pictures in front of it. After walking through to “The Strip” (Las Vegas Boulevard), we saw the beautiful Bellagio fountains. Next, we drove to Fremont Street and spent some time wandering around. We saw a cool light show on the entire ceiling (similar to the Union Station Hotel), an indoor Superman zipline, and an incredible spray paint artist, then drove to our hotel to spend the night.

It's been almost 5 months since my last update, so my guilt has finally motivated me enough to get another one written. I got so used to writing about our moving and traveling adventures that it is difficult to just write about everyday stuff now that residency is keeping us in one place! Back in July, Paul was fortunate enough to only have to work one shift over 4th of July weekend. We decided to go up to my parent's place on Mille Lacs Lake (where I spent my summers growing up). It was little surreal being able to do the things with my own kids that I did as a kid on the same lake that I did them (fishing, tubing & skiing, playing on the lake shore, etc). And there is nothing that makes me still feel young more than doing active things that require some physical skill (such as water skiing). California Trip 11/24/22

Day 5 This morning we started our day by driving to see the Painted Ladies in San Francisco. Next, we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge, stopped briefly, then went back across. After that, we stopped at the Palace of Fine Arts, and while there, we walked around the manmade pond and fascinating architecture. Following that, we went to the Wave Organ and got a nice view of the GGB and of Alcatraz Island. Then, we drove down Lombard Street again on the way to Pier 39. We parked about a block away from the pier, and the parking was free because of Thanksgiving! A couple of things we saw there were seals, musical stairs, a crepe shop, a Christmas tree, and an old railroad ramp. We walked around for a while and eventually decided to catch a streetcar (twice) before heading back to our car. As we rounded the corner to our block, we noticed our empty suitcase sitting at a bus stop. Someone (most likely a homeless person) had burned the cords that were tying it down, taking our air mattresses

Hello all. Just wanted to give you all a little update on how our first couple of weeks in VA have been. We are all moved in and unpacked in our new house in Suffolk, VA. We are about 10 miles (15 min) from the Naval Hospital where Paul will be working. I might try to find a part-time job until the baby is born (around Thanksgiving). Although we are loving our new house, we are already getting homesick for our friends and family. Hopefully we will start meeting some people around here soon! I had my first pregnancy visit just before we moved. For those of you who have been asking, I am feeling much better (no more queasy stomach), and I have not gained any weight yet so I can't send any pictures of my big fat belly since I don't have one yet! The weather here has been very inconsistent so far. It was rainy and cold, then sunny and 75, then rainy and humid, and now it's hot (close to 90) and humid.
